After all is DONE.

Mahatma Ghandi once said, “Each one has to find his peace from within, and peace, to be real must be unaffected by outside circumstances.” Peace is one of the most common yet most eluded word in this day and time. We hear it so often that it fails to mean much to us. In fact we only remember its true essence when the pressures of life overwhelm us.

When I found out that the last challenge for the year was about peace and the winter Olympics I thought it was a great choice. I don’t know about other beaders but for me, beading gives me some peace. It may sound strange but it’s true. I find that whenever I get agitated or worried, I bead and even though it doesn’t take away the problem behind the agitation, it calms me down enough to think it through. And sincerely, I’d like to believe that other beaders experience the same thing with their craft too, if not, how else can you explain the result of the beautiful works that were created for the challenge? (or the bulk in your shops????)

On a serious note though, beads are a lot more related to peace than we really care to know. In ancient times, rulers and kings used precious stones and precious metals to achieve certain levels of calm in order to remain rational in their daily dealings. These stones were woven into amulets in jewellery forms so that they could carry them with them all the time. Yes, jewellery didn’t get invented for just accessorizing (and kings and rulers used them more than the women); they were a fancy way to wear amulets without looking ridiculous.

We all know that there is the belief that precious stones carry certain energies with them. You know, Agate inspires fidelity, strengthens eyesight and helps to relieve thirst. Blue Topaz stimulates the creative thinking process and helps us to verbalize our thoughts. Cat’s eye offers a feeling of serene happiness. It stimulates awareness and intuition, allowing the wearer to gain insight and thus find balance in the evolutions and transformations that life brings…..and the list goes on.

Whether we believe in the magical properties of materials we use in our creation or not, the joy of taking plain looking materials and creating something beautiful out of them must, to a certain level, bring a measure of contentment and hopefully peace (if only for the moment of admiring one’s work) to the creator.

I know that when I saw the theme for the challenge it made me purposely consider what peace meant to me. And just like I said in the beginning of this article, peace is something I overlook most of the time even though in my subconscious I think and want it all the time.

My daughter provided me with the idea for the piece I had submitted for the challenge. When I thought back to how she came up with the idea, I realized that to a certain extent, Mahatma Gandhi captured her insight on it beautifully “ Each one has to find his peace from within….”

So to those of you that took the challenge, may the peace you gleaned from within to inspire your creation remain with you….and for the rest of you, may peace follow and remain with you all. Happy New Year! See you at the next challenge.

First Challenge of 2010 Theme

This is a time of year that is extra busy for all of us so the next Challenge entries are not due until February 5th 2010!

The winner of the last Challenge - Melissa of grakowsky - gets to choose the next theme. And here it is:

I have been thinking about the theme. I think I'd like to be the ocean or the sea. I chose this theme because I love the water and have seen many beautiful ocean-inspired pieces of beaded jewelry before. The vastness of the ocean is awe-inspiring and has moved many artists in the past to capture a piece of its beauty. The challenge entries can draw from the imagery of the water itself, sea life, or even ocean-related activity. The challenge entrants should state what aspect of the ocean inspired their piece.

You may start your entry today and must complete and list it by midnight Etsy time, February 5, 2010! This is the first Challenge for 2010 and therefore your first opportunity to fulfill EBW membership requirements: At least once a year enter the EBW Challenge.!

Rules:
Any style, any technique with a majority of beadweaving is welcome. (Pieces submitted for the challenges should be newly-created (by you - not from a pattern) between the date the challenge theme is announced and the 5th of the month when it is due. Do not renew an existing or expired listing for the challenge.)

ONE only entry allowed per EBW Member.

The piece MUST be created between now and February 5, 2010.

See our Challenge FAQ here for all of the details on the rules of our challenges.

When I saw the photo of the Hibiscus shown in my thumbnails, I knew it was the flower I wanted to use. The color of the petals was so striking to me, especially against the green background. I also loved the shape of the gently curving petals and immediately thought I could model them.

December Challenge Theme - Peace Piece

Our "tied for first" October Challenge winners have put their heads together and come up with a great theme for December!

SmadarTreasure and AngelqueCreations tied for first place on the October challenge and collaborated to come up with a theme for the next challenge. Peace and Winter Oylmpics. The Winter Olympics are being sponsored by Vancouver, BC, Canada in February 2010.

Annie's theme is:

Super-Power Jewelry

Disney, the Mouse's house recently made the acquisition of Marvel. That created quite a storm in the industry. We have seen a lot of SuperHeros movies this year and that seems to be just the beginning of the wave. Therefore I would like to challenge you to dedicate a piece to your favorite Super Heros. Immerse yourself in the fantastic and futuristic or step back in time of Disney cartoon. Possibilities are endless! Run as fast and far as your imagination! It doesnt have to depict your favorite heros but a piece with super powers would be just awesome!

Lazer on girls! (and boys!)

So there you have it and doesn't it sound like fun? What exciting and amazing creations will be entered for October? I can hardly wait to see!

The July EBW Challenge was won by kraftymax. Her prize, as always, is getting to choose our next Challenge Theme. Here is what she had to say about her theme:

Indian Summer Dream

First, I want to thank everyone who voted and supported me in the June challenge. I am still quite amazed at winning! So I have thought long and hard about the theme of the challenge that I get to choose. I had one that I thought was perfect, but then another would just pop into my head and ‘that’ one was the perfect one! Well EBW Members, here it is, the perfect one, Indian Summer Dream. I have always loved the fall and the changing of seasons, so let’s see how many seed beads it takes to create the perfect “Indian Summer Dream” for each of us!

The Challenge has been issued and doesn't it sound like something you'd like to try? What amazing creations are EBW members going to come up with? You'll want to be checking back here to see!

EBW July Challenge - Here comes the bride... Has a Winner!

The July EBW Challenge had 39 entries, with a total of 735 votes (which is an amazing number!) and 109 of them went to our winner - Intertwined in Love for Wedding Bliss by kraftymax.

Here is what she had to say about her entry:

I recently was accepted as a member and immediately set out to make a special piece for my first entrance into the monthly challenge. I must tell everyone that I had a design in mind, however, when I was about 80% done with it I broke a bead (after about 10 hours of work) and the bead cut 3 strands of beading thread and my piece of art literally fell in half in my hands. Frustrated I was about to start over when this design pushed its way into my mind. The broken piece still sits on my desk (I haven’t even taken it apart yet) and this one took on a life of its own.

August Challenge Theme

The June EBW Challenge was won by Licia of Liciabeads. Her prize, as always, is getting to choose our next Challenge Theme. Here is what she had to say about her theme:

First Ladies of Style

Around the world and through time, styles, patterns and textures have developed. Every so often a person, or even culture stands out as having a great eye for style and design. I wanted to choose a theme that could span time and cultures yet recognize that eye for style. Your work can range from an interpretation of the bold and colorful patterns designs found in ancient times, to traditional cultural designs that are found around the world, all the way to the more modern styles of present times.

The Challenge has been issued and it sounds like you will want to give it some thought! What are EBW members going to come up with? You can be sure that whatever they do create will be wonderful!

You can start your entry today and complete and list it by midnight Etsy time, August 5, 2009!

Rules:
Any style, any technique with a majority of beadweaving is welcome.
ONE only entry allowed per person.
The piece MUST be created between now and August 5, 2009.

See our Challenge FAQ here for all of the details on the rules of our challenges.

EBW 2009 Beaded Quilt to help fight breast cancer

Last year after reading about the Bead & Button Show and their auction to help fight breast cancer, I came across Jeanette Shanigan's website and her beaded quilts. Jeanette asks beaders around the world to donate individual beaded squares based on a theme. She then sews the squares together to make gorgeous quilts, mounts them in shadow boxes and donates them to be auctioned at the Bead & Button show. In 2008, these quilts raised nearly $4,400 for breast cancer research.

Being a member of the Etsy BeadWeaver's team (EBW), I knew we were sitting on a goldmine of talent. I asked the group if they would like to make squares to be included in Jeanette's quilts. I would collect all of the squares and submit them at one time in hopes that they would all be included in one quilt. Fifteen EBW members stepped up and created 35 squares to be included in a 2009 quilt. The theme for 2009 is "Bead artists have the heart to take on breast cancer" and I believe the EBW contributors did a magnificent job representing it.

Below is a mosaic I created of all of the EBW squares. This is not the actual quilt, only a digital version using photos I took of each square. Please visit the Bead & Button Show website to find out more information about the auctions, which will be held June 6, 2009. Below the mosaic is a list of contributors and links to their shops.
