Etsy Beadweavers March 2016 Challenge: "Masquerade"

Anna Cohen of AnnaCohen Beadwork Jewelry, our January "Rising Star" winner, has chosen the Challenge for March 2016:

"Masquerade" - wearing a costume with a mask.  There are many holidays all over the world that involve changing appearance - Halloween scary garbs, Jewish Purim costumes, Venice Carnival famous masks, Rio de Janeiro's amazing Carnival costumes ... It brings joy and fun, no matter what historical event lead to it.

Let's create something festive.  It doesn't have to be a mask, but a feeling of carnival. Maybe you will choose something scary for Halloween, or colorful for the Chinese New Year Lion Dance.  So many varieties of masks and reasons for joy.

Let the party begin!

Note to team members:

Please be sure to have your entry listed in your Etsy shop by March 5, 2016 23:59 EST and remember to include EBWC in the title and tags of your entry.

Kindly refer to the Challenge rules for details on what is allowed in Challenge entries to ensure that your entry is compliant.

Etsy Beadweavers February 2016 Challenge: "The Solar System"

Sarah Cryer of  SarahCryerBeadwork has chosen "The Solar System" as the theme for February 2016:

In our house at the moment we are completely obsessed with our Solar System. My husband has a new telescope which we've been using to look at the moon and planets, so he's constantly coming up with new activities (last week we all watched the International Space Station whizz over us). Recently we saw a wonderful harvest moon, followed the same night by the lunar eclipse (so much better than last year's cloud covered solar eclipse), and last week I opened my newspaper to see some extraordinary new images of Jupiter's storms from the Hubble Space Telescope, so when it came to choosing a theme it seemed like the whole universe was shouting at me!
Anyway, our Solar System seems like wonderful inspiration for beaders - how about beaded beads making a necklace of planets, a scatter of rough natural crystals captured in freeform beadwork forming the Asteroid belt, or some bead embroidery inspired by the twisting stripes of Jupiter's storms? And if you get stuck you can always watch our favourite song for inspiration, or if you are feeling more sensible have a look at the Hubble website's gallery (don't get distracted by the far off nebulae though, please stick to our own Solar System).

EBW July Challenge "Architecture"

Our theme for the July challenge has been chosen by Sarah Cryer from SarahCryerBeadwork, one of the three winners of the May challenge. The other winners, Chris Maj from beadn4fun and Hannah Rosner from HannahRachel, decided to let our new member Sarah have a free reign in the choice of the theme and what a wonderful theme it is!

Architecture

'Architecture' - all around us, with shapes & structures, textures & materials to inspire. Anything from the mundane (the half hexagon of our bay windows repeated along our suburban street; the endless glass panels of a modern office block; or the beauty of a stone wall), to the magnificent (the sails of the Sydney Opera House; the geometric structure of the Eiffel Tower, or the joy of the newly restored windows of Saint Chapelle in Paris). So take a look out of the window, dig out those old city guides & mini-break photos, drool over the latest eco-home or modernist cube, ancient temple or grand railway station and think laterally (or even literally).

Note to team members: Please check the challenge rules to see what details must be in your listing. The entry must be listed in your Etsy shop by July 5th. Have fun creating!

EBW Team June 2015 Challenge "Game Of Thrones"

Edita Kricenaite, the winner of the April Challenge has chosen the theme for June:

"Game Of Thrones"

It seems the whole world is crazy about this TV serial. I think it is an inexhaustible source for imagination: from the fantasy world to dragons, zombies and other strange creatures, from the ancient environment with its castles to unique nature views, from royal costumes and dresses to the endless scenes of war. What (or who) inspires you the most about this film? Please show us in your jewelry and tell about it in your description.

Please don't post any photos from the series alongside your piece as it will constitute copyright infringement. Direct copying of any element is also not allowed.

Let the game of thrones begin in your home!!!

Note to team members: Please check the challenge rules to see what details must be in your listing.  The entry must be listed in your Etsy shop by June 5th.  Have fun creating!

EBW Team May 2015 Challenge "Inspired by Chihuli"

Karen Parker, winner of the March challenge, has chosen the theme for May 2015:

“Inspired by Chihuly”

The theme for May’s Challenge is “Inspired by Chihuly”. Dale Chihuly is an American glass artist and is best known for his large scale blown glass creations. As bead artists, we work with glass beads on a much different scale but Chihuly’s luminous glass creations and their unworldly shapes and colors can still inspire us. You can see his work at http://www.chihuly.com.

Reference in detail your source of inspiration in your description, including links to Chihuly's works, but please don't post any photos of Chihuly’s work alongside your piece, as it will constitute copyright infringement. Direct copying of any portion of his imagery is also not allowed.

Note to team members: Please check the challenge rules to see what details must be in your listing.  The entry must be listed in your Etsy shop by May 5th.  Have fun creating!

EBW Team April 2015 Challenge "Hardware"

Kris Empting-Obenland, the winner of our February Challenge, has chosen the theme for April 2015:

"Hardware"

Please enter your favorite hardware store and get at least one item of whatever inspires you and integrate it into your piece of beaded jewelry!  In case you're still snowed in, your private stock in your basement or garage might do just as well. ;-)

If you choose one single element of hardware it should be the main focal in your piece.  Alternatively you can use a random number of elements.  In any case please explain what you used in the description.

I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Note to team members: Work on this challenge may be started from today, February 18th.  The entry must be listed in your Etsy shop by April 5th.  Please check the challenge rules to see what details must be in your listing.  Have fun creating!

Voting for May "Hungarian Folk Art" Challenge

Sorry we had some technical glitches this morning so the poll will remain open until 7:30am pacific daylight time May 16th.

Arlene of ArtfulAr, winner of the March 2013 "Faberge Egg" challenge has chose the May 2013 theme. She explained the guidelines as follows:

The theme I chose for the May 2013 Etsy Beadweavers Challenge is 'Hungarian Folk Art.'

Growing up in a Hungarian home, my Mother and Grandmother were so very talented in all the arts. Embroidery was one art they excelled in; doilies, napkins, tablecloths, etc. This theme is special to me and brings back wonderful memories. The beautiful rich colors and designs are a delight to the eye. Create your own art from the inspirational designs [form an image search], or any reference for Hungarian Folk Art of your choosing.

Vote for your favorite entry as shown in the mosaic below, and view each one in greater detail by clicking on the images within the mosaic, or the links below.

Voting for for this challenge is on May 9th - 15th. Click on the images within or the links below the mosaic to see additional views and read about each piece in detail.

July 2012 Theme Announced "Tangerine Tango"

Kinga, winner of the May Challenge has chosen our July theme!

"Tangerine Tango"

Every year the Pantone Color Institute hosts a secret meeting of experts in a European capital. After two days of debate, a “Color of the Year” is chosen. The 2012 Color of the Year is Tangerine Tango.

The chosen color captures the Zeitgeist: the spirit of our time. In this case, the vibrant, reddish-orange hue fills us with optimism and hope, recharges us, and helps us move forward. It's bold, encouraging, and signals vitality, urgency and strength. By now it's all over the place when it comes to fashion and interior design.

This month, let's use Tangerine Tango as the main character in our beaded stories. You are not limited to only this color, but other colors should be used to compliment the orange, not over power it.

The only requirement is, the finished piece must be mostly orange.

To see Tangerine Tango for yourself, here is a link to an article that includes a big swatch of this beautiful orange: http://newsfeed.time.com/2011/12/09/tan ... r-of-2012/

Voting for May Challenge - "Nautical Inspired"

Sydney of LostAloha winner of the March challenge "Destinations" challenge came up with the May Challenge "NAUTICAL INSPIRED" theme.

"One of my favorite things about being from the Oregon Coast is how much the culture and economy is tied to the ocean (and it's storms), the ports, and all the lush ocean life. My challenge is to make something Nautical inspired -- be it sailor stripes, a pirate's life, sea stars and octopi, or a siren atop a hefty, rusty anchor -- with Memorial Day on the way, I will definitely make my way down to the docks to see all the boats and fisherman, and welcome in all the sunshine.. With an occasional high-winds warning and some dark, churning ocean waves."

Voting starts May 9 - May 15th, (See right side for poll which will be posted on the 9th)

Your listing date is proof you entered by the deadline, and also determines your placement in the mosaic, so DO NOT RENEW your work until after the voting poll opens on the 9th.

Your listing must be for sale for the duration of the challenge (not made to order), unless it sells from your shop. If that happens, please alert the moderators to your sale, and you can still participate. If you must reserve your listing for purchase, please follow Etsy's recommendations and edit both your title and your description to begin with: "RESERVED FOR (buyer's Etsy username, or designation of buyer's choice) ONLY." Etsy does not allow the listing of items not for sale, so reserving your entry to sell elsewhere or keep for yourself is not permitted. Please do not put your shop on vacation mode when you have an item entered in the challenge, or deactivate your entry from the time you list, until the close of the challenge. If you must be away from your shop, please leave your challenge entry active, with a message explaining the date the item will shipped if purchased."

WHAT INFORMATION MUST BE IN MY LISTING?

Your listing must include the following four (4) things:
1. The theme of the challenge. For example, “This (describe your work) was created for the Etsy Beadweavers Team (insert the month) challenge on the theme (insert the title of the theme).”
2. An explanation of how your work relates to the theme.

3. The address of our team blog where the voting will take place and the voting dates. For example, “Please visit our team blog, http://www.etsy-beadweavers.blogspot.com between the 9th and 15th and vote for your favorite entry.”

4.Tag your entry EBWC. This is how we find your entry. Please test this tag by searching "handmade" and "EBWC" on Etsy. If your entry does not appear in this search within an hour after listing and tagging it, please contact a moderator for assistance. Please do not apply this tag until after the previous challenge poll closes on the 15th, and remove the tag after the voting poll closes, so entries for the next month’s challenge can be featured.

About Promoting the Public Voting Poll

The purpose of the public poll is to bring as many viewers to our team blog as possible, increasing awareness of Etsy Beadweavers and our art form. The winner of the public poll should be the work that the most viewers liked the best. Promote the challenge by inviting as many friends, acquaintances, co-workers and family members as you like to vote for their favorite entry. Please use your blog, Facebook, Twitter and any other resources you have to drive traffic to our blog during the challenge. Feel free to say which entry is yours. Many friends will choose to support you with a vote. But please DO NOT request that your friends vote for your work, or that of another member. Please let them make up their own minds about which entry they like the best. Let’s play fair with each other, and keep our challenges fun for all.

Voting for March Challenge "Destinations"

The winner of the team vote in our December challenge, Jacquie Champion of Angelque Creations has selected her March theme for 2012.

"Destinations"
During the winter months here in the Pacific North West we all dream of warmer, sunnier weather after many long days of dark dreariness and rain, oh so much rain. Many of us migrate to warmer climates in Feb and March for a period of time. I will be heading to Hawaii, Where would you go? Pick a destination of where you would like to travel, it does not have to be a warmer climate or even a real location it could be a fantasy destination. Design your entry around the destination and explain why you chose this destination and how your entry fits. Lets all have some fun.

Voting starts March 9 - March 15th, (See right side for poll which will be posted on the 9th)
PLEASE VOTE ONLY ONCE FOR YOUR FAVORITE ENTRY

To see larger pictures of the entries please go to the lsting below the mosaic and click on the entry, you will be taken to their shop to view the entry.
