Voting for December Challenge :Emotional Rollercoaster"

Marsha from HauteIceBeadwork, internal vote winner of our October 2012 "Misty Winter's Dawn" challenge selected the theme for our December 2012 challenge:

Emotional Roller Coaster

Marsha's theme guidelines were as follows:

Find beady inspiration in a human emotion. Choose a feeling or state of being: joy, sorrow, cowardice, jealousy, anxiety, or anything that describes a powerful emotion. Create a beaded artwork that expresses your chosen emotion.

Think about the use of design elements as you work. Colors all have emotional connotations, and lines and textures do, too. You can use repetition, gradation, mass, scale and proportion, pattern, contrasts, balance or harmony, anything you can think of to make your work look and feel like your chosen emotion. Try to avoid using symbols, like a smiley face or emoticons.

The finished mosaic collection of our work will provide an "emotional roller coaster ride," a fast paced, whirlwind tour of feeling and sensation for our fans, as they view our many different interpretations of this theme. Remember to explain how you designed your work to demonstrate your chosen emotion in your description.

Voting for for this challenge  is on December 9th - 15th.

Click on the images within or the links below the mosaic to see additional views and read about each piece in detail.

Voting for the December Challenge - "Arabesque Style"

The winner of the team vote in our October challenge, Joanne Teague of ThistleDew4U, has selected the December theme for our final challenge of the year. The theme of December's Etsy Beadweavers challenge is "ARABESQUE STYLE." Arabesque is an ornamental design style consisting of interwoven vines, flowers, leaves and geometric forms, often combined with other motifs. Motifs in Persian art can be a paisley, a geometric shape, a horse, lion, or flower. Western art motif examples include acanthus, egg and dart, and fleur de lis. Arabesque patterning is used in Persian rugs, tilework, medieval manuscripts, embroidery patterns and architecture.

The subject is broad, spanning several centuries and cultures with a wealth of inspiration material.

What did our entrants make of it? Please view this month's contest entries below.

Voting for this challenge runs December 9th - December 15th.

Arabesque is an ornamental design style consisting of interwoven vines, flowers, leaves and geometric forms, often combined with other motifs. Think of it as your own creative fodder. The subject is broad, spanning several centuries and cultures with a wealth of inspiration material. What will you make of it? We shall see. Joanne offers this inspirational image to get you started: The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Songs of Inspiration: daunted by choice? Tactics to ‘de-daunt’ and get beading

December’s Etsy’s beadweaver’s challenge has a wonderful theme thanks to Olga of Made. She has challenged everyone to create a beadweaving pieced inspired by the theme: "Simon & Garfunkel - The Songs of Inspiration". We have lots of choice with this theme given how productive and prolific the USA song writing duo have been.

Simon and Garfunkel began writing songs together in 1955, recorded their first single in 1957 and between 1964 and 1970 recorded 5 studio albums. They have accumulated an impressive list of successes for this work - 16 of their singles made it to the US Billboard Hot 100 singles list, they gained Grammy Awards for their song Mrs Robinson, have a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and won a BRIT Award in 1977 for the best international album of the past 25 years (for Bridge Over Troubled Waters).

For EBWers who listened to Simon and Garfunkel music in the 1960s and 1970s choosing one of their songs to inspire their beadwork might come easily. On the other hand, it might be daunting because you have so many favourites. For EBWers not born when Simon and Garfunkel were at their height and/or for one reason or another are not familiar with their music Olga’s challenge might seem daunting for quite different reasons. If you feel a little daunted by this challenge, read on.

Tactics to ‘de-daunt’ and get beading

  • Choose a song alphabetically – what is the first letter of your name, your partner’s name or your pet? Look up the Simon and Garfunkel songs that started with this letter (see link to an Alphabetical listing below) and just choose the one that speaks most to you. Then try googling Google images using the song title. I have tried this with a couple and found some inspiring images emerge. I've included one in this blog that 'Bridge over troubled water' found.
  • Choose your favourite album cover – visit the image bank of their album covers (link below) and choose the one that you are most attracted to. Then you can click on it and be taken to the album tracks so that you can listen to them. Let the album art inspire you – what colours, shapes, style does it suggest? How might they come into your beadwork?
  • Choose one of their really hot singles from the USA Billboard Hot 100 singles list. That narrows your choice to just 16 songs. Then let your imagination run wild. What title intrigues you? Which one do you least know? Go with the unknown for a journey into creativity with your beading. Close your eyes when you listen to the song and see what shapes and colours flow.
  • Scan the track list for each album (link below) and choose one that has the most unusual word in it that you know. Maybe that word could be in your beadwork.
  • Scan the track list and think about the song that most reminds you of your favourite colour. Line up the beads you have in that colour, listen to the song and start beading.
  • Print out the track list and stick a pin it – agree with yourself to use whatever song your pin lands on. Serendipity sometimes brings the most creative moments in our work.
  • Take the Quiz below that tells you what Simon and Garfunkel song you are - it's fun and quick to do.
Do you have some good ‘de-daunting’ tactics you can share with others? Or, perhaps you are not daunted at all. Inspire others by sharing how you’ll choose.

However you make your choice good luck with and I look forward to see the inspirational work that flows from Olga's inspirational theme.

December Challenge Theme - Peace Piece

Our "tied for first" October Challenge winners have put their heads together and come up with a great theme for December!

SmadarTreasure and AngelqueCreations tied for first place on the October challenge and collaborated to come up with a theme for the next challenge. Peace and Winter Oylmpics. The Winter Olympics are being sponsored by Vancouver, BC, Canada in February 2010.

December Challenge Theme

Our last challenge winner was two winners who were tied so triz and SmadarsTreasure got together and jointly decided on the theme "Snow Queen".

Here is what triz has to say about it:

December is the month I associate with snow. Sadly I don't get to enjoy snow anymore, as I no longer live in Europe, but I miss waking up first thing in the morning and seeing white all around, the city tranformed into a magical land... and that land of course has a queen, the Snow Queen!

Thank you both for such a timely and inspiring theme.

We all have a busy time of year ahead of us so it's going to interesting to see what our EBW Team members come up with for this challenge! It's the last challenge of the year so if you haven't already participated this year, it's your last chance! Why not just DO IT!!

Rules:
Any style, any technique with a majority of beadweaving is welcome.
ONE only entry allowed per person.
The piece must be created between October 31th, 2008 and December 5th, 2008.

See our FAQ here for all of the details on the rules of our challenges.

So, if you've already finished your entry for the October's challenge (Ancestral Expressions - voting begins November 9th) then get beading on a wintery Snow Queen piece!
