May 2013 Theme Announced: "Hungarian Folk Art" Theme and Entries"

FABERGE EGG:

Gather ideas and inspiration from the Faberge eggs’ fine, meticulous elaboration and amazingly detailed lacy patterns.

HISTORY:

One day the Russian Tsar Alexander III. wanted to give something special to surprise his wife, Maria Fjodorovna for the occasion of Easter. For the noble purpose he asked the well-known jeweler Peter Carl FabergĂ© who made a specially crafted jewelry egg placing gold chick inside, diamond crown and a Ruby egg (unfortunately we only can read about them as they got lost in the storms of History). The Tsar and the Empress were so impressed and from that day on it become a habit to celebrate the resurrection of Christ by giving FabergĂ© Eggs. Master Faberge’s eggs were already legendary at that time, and now are considered precious treasures.

DOs and DON’Ts:

DO NOT post photos of Faberge eggs along with your work; It is copyright infringement. DO NOT Re-create a Faberge egg; This will result in disqualification. DO post a link to your source of inspiration in the description.

LINK:

Here is a link to get your creative juices flowing.

You may start your entry today December 28 and post to your shop by midnight March 5th Etsy time. Please do not tag your entry with EBWC until the February challenge is complete (February 16th)

THE CHALLENGE RULES

Any EBW member may create one new beadweaving of your own design (not from a tutorial, kit, book, magazine, or class) in response to the challenge theme. Your work should be entirely beadwoven, or have a substantially woven component, to feature and promote our art form. You may not renew an existing piece, or list a tutorial or made-to-order item as an entry.

Members are expected to participate in challenges when possible, and required to do so once each year. Start the weaving anytime after the theme is announced. Complete and list the work for sale on Etsy by the 5th of the month of the challenge, before midnight Etsy (Eastern Standard) time. Your listing date is proof you entered by the deadline, and also determines your placement in the mosaic, so DO NOT RENEW your work until after the voting poll opens on the 9th.

Your listing must be for sale for the duration of the challenge (not made to order), unless it sells from your shop. If that happens, please alert the moderators to your sale, and you can still participate. If you must reserve your listing for purchase, please follow Etsy's recommendations and edit both your title and your description to begin with: "RESERVED FOR (buyer's Etsy username, or designation of buyer's choice) ONLY." Etsy does not allow the listing of items not for sale, so reserving your entry to sell elsewhere or keep for yourself is not permitted. Please do not put your shop on vacation mode when you have an item entered in the challenge, or deactivate your entry from the time you list, until the close of the challenge. If you must be away from your shop, please leave your challenge entry active, with a message explaining the date the item will shipped if purchased."

WHAT INFORMATION MUST BE IN MY LISTING?

Your listing must include the following four (4) things:
1. The theme of the challenge. For example, “This (describe your work) was created for the Etsy Beadweavers Team (insert the month) challenge on the theme (insert the title of the theme).”

3. The address of our team blog where the voting will take place and the voting dates. For example, “Please visit our team blog, http://www.etsy-beadweavers.blogspot.com between the 9th and 15th and vote for your favorite entry.”

If your entry does not appear in this search within an hour after listing and tagging it, please contact a moderator for assistance. Please do not apply this tag until after the previous challenge poll closes on the 15th, and remove the tag after the voting poll closes, so entries for the next month’s challenge can be featured.

Voting for December Challenge :Emotional Rollercoaster"

Marsha from HauteIceBeadwork, internal vote winner of our October 2012 "Misty Winter's Dawn" challenge selected the theme for our December 2012 challenge:

Emotional Roller Coaster

Marsha's theme guidelines were as follows:

Find beady inspiration in a human emotion. Choose a feeling or state of being: joy, sorrow, cowardice, jealousy, anxiety, or anything that describes a powerful emotion. Create a beaded artwork that expresses your chosen emotion.

Think about the use of design elements as you work. Colors all have emotional connotations, and lines and textures do, too. You can use repetition, gradation, mass, scale and proportion, pattern, contrasts, balance or harmony, anything you can think of to make your work look and feel like your chosen emotion. Try to avoid using symbols, like a smiley face or emoticons.

The finished mosaic collection of our work will provide an "emotional roller coaster ride," a fast paced, whirlwind tour of feeling and sensation for our fans, as they view our many different interpretations of this theme. Remember to explain how you designed your work to demonstrate your chosen emotion in your description.

Voting for for this challenge  is on December 9th - 15th.

Click on the images within or the links below the mosaic to see additional views and read about each piece in detail.

February 2013 Theme Announced: JAPAN

Kris from KrisDesignsFSP, internal vote winner of our November Circles & Squares" challenge has chosen the theme for our February 2013 challenge.

JAPAN

Japan has a most exciting culture. There is a distinct division between past and future: ancient traditional values with their strong rituals, art forms and language on one side, versus the crazy dazzling fashion modernity, neon colors, and plastic kitsch on the other side.

Pick ONE of these two styles to create a piece of jewelry that shows the important criteria needed to convey either the traditional or the modern Japan. OR: combine both styles into one piece accentuating the contrasts!

This is the theme for the February 2013 challenge - you have plenty of time, surpass yourselves! You can start your creation now Nov 25, 2012 and list in your shop by Feb 5, 2013. Please remember that if you list early to only use the EBWC tag after the January 2013 challenge has ended.

December 2012 Theme Announced "Emotional Roller Coaster"

Marsha from HauteIceBeadwork, internal vote winner of our October 2012 "Misty Winter's Dawn" challenge has chosen the theme for our December 2012 challenge.

Emotional Roller Coaster

You may start your entry today October 21, and post to your shop by midnight December 5th Etsy time. Please do not tag your entry with EBWC until the November challenge is complete (November 16th).

January 2012 "Rising Star" Challenge

The moderator team has been bouncing around the idea of adding a January challenge that will be open only to those members who have not won a challenge in the past 3 years. This new challenge will have no theme and is open to any new work that is created from September 29, 2012 to January 5th, 2013*. This irregular challenge is proposed to be an addition to our regular monthly challenges but only open to those members that have not won one of the regular monthly challenges in the past three years.

Notes:
• Deadline for submission is Jan 5, 2013, midnight Etsy Time.
• Winner will be getting a donated goodie bag of beads & related items.

Rule Exception for the January Challenge Only:
• Only entries from members who have NOT won a challenge (public and internal polls) in the last 3 years (since Dec 2009)
• Item is ANY new beadwoven item made from Sept 29 until January 2013 and must be listed in members shop by January 5th 2013 midnight Etsy time.
• Entry must be new and has not been previously entered in a challenge.
• Entry must tagged with EBWC only after the December Challenge has finished (Dec 16th)

Challenge rules remain the same except as detailed above. (see below for the regular challenge rules)

2. An explanation of how your work relates to the theme.
3. The address of our team blog where the voting will take place and the voting dates. For example, “Please visit our team blog, http://www.etsy-beadweavers.blogspot.com between the 9th and 15th and vote for your favorite entry.”
4.Tag your entry EBWC. This is how we find your entry. Please test this tag by searching "handmade" and "EBWC" on Etsy. If your entry does not appear in this search within an hour after listing and tagging it, please contact a moderator for assistance. Please do not apply this tag until after the previous challenge poll closes on the 15th, and remove the tag after the voting poll closes, so entries for the next month’s challenge can be featured.

November 2012 Theme Announced "Circles and Squares"

Kris, internal and popular vote winner of our September 2012 "Lunar Obsession" challenge has chosen the theme for our November 2012 challenge.

CIRCLES & SQUARES

Let´s play geometrically! Compose circles and squares into new shapes, emphasize the contrast between round and angular, soft and hard. There are no color restrictions but try to underline the contrast via your color choices. Shapes are not intended to be achieved by the shape of a particular bead only, but by the shapes and patterns in your weaving/embroidery.

Voting for September Challenge "A Lunar Obsession"

Kinga, winner of the July "Tangerine Tango" challenge, selected our September challenge theme. Because the farmer's almanac calls the full moon of September the Harvest Moon, she selected that this month's challenge creations be inspired by the moon.

While the entries do not have to depict the moon to qualify, they did need to draw inspiration from it.

Voting starts September 9th - September 15th, (See right side for poll which will be posted on the 9th.)

PLEASE VOTE ONLY ONCE FOR YOUR FAVORITE ENTRY
